52, NC cavern and low back pain

Linville Caverns is located deep beneath Humpback Mountain in western NC.

Due to being deeply insulated by tons of solid limestone and dolomite rock, it remains a constant 52 degrees F year round.

Deep inside our low back region lies the lumbar multifidi muscles. They are involved in local stability, postural control and joint protection.

The lumbar multifidus are directly encapsulated by the connective tissue matrix called the thoracolumbar fascia.

Research has found a 52% reduction in thoracolumbar fascia shear strain in individuals with back pain and range of motion restriction.

Researchers use shear strain to measure how well layers of tissue glide past one another during movement.

Scientifically speaking, chronic pain and immobility cause the fascial planes surrounding the deep back muscles to lose their elasticity and “stick” together.

This is what we are identifying when we ask you, “where do you feel this exercise?”

We want to know if the low back is being “picked at”

If you feel it in the hurt area, it could cause more inflammation and irritation.

This restriction heavily impairs the recruitment, movement and independent function of the underlying multifidus muscle.

We ultimately want the deep layer of low back muscles to work well with aging just like a stable cave environment.

That is why the lumbar multifidus muscle is 1 of our 6 Green Zones.

Longevity. Healthspan. Prevention.
