Mulch season: 3 pieces of advice

Mulch season: 3 pieces of advice

Like clockwork, we get similar calls this time of year to help back pain.

Guess what it is?!

Yes, Monday morning back woes from mulching all weekend 🙂

I would rather not put out these fires but help you or your significant other from the suburban-spring-time-mulching-syndrome.

Here are some hints to prevent you from over-doing this task:

  1. Use your legs instead of your back.

We have all heard this before! One way to practice this is to stand facing against a wall with a chair directly behind you. Try to sit in the chair without hitting the wall with your face. This will help improve your squat to use your gluteal muscles and less back muscles.

  2. Warm up prior to doing your chores.

Yes, we are at that age that we need to warm up prior to doing chores!  Just like you warm up prior to lifting in the gym or running sprints, loosening your muscles prior to yard work can be very helpful in preventing injury.  We recommend focusing on stretching your hip muscles.

  3. Let your muscles rest.

Even if you are using good form, you can’t expect your muscles to work 100% picking up bags all day long once a year. Work 2 hours and then come back the next day.  Trust me, your body will like you more.

If you do get hurt, no worries, we can put out the fire.  I hope PhysioFit will also be your choice for injury recovery and getting the best relief in the Triangle.
