TMJ Risk Reduction Program

TMJ Risk Reduction Program

Prevent Jaw Pain Before It Starts

If you’ve been prescribed a sleep apnea oral appliance, your provider may have referred you to our TMJ Risk Reduction Program to help ensure you get the maximum benefit from your device — without developing jaw pain.

TMJ discomfort (temporomandibular joint pain) is the most common side effect of using an oral appliance for sleep apnea. Your provider’s screening indicated that you may be at risk of developing TMJ irritation or pain, which is why this preventative program is being recommended before and after you begin using your device.

Our goal is simple:
Keep your jaw healthy and comfortable — so you can continue to wear your oral appliance long term and experience its full benefits for your sleep and overall health.

1. Time Frame & Recommended Schedule

The TMJ Risk Reduction Program includes a minimum of two sessions designed to prepare and protect your jaw during your oral appliance journey.

  • Initial Evaluation:
Conducted before your oral appliance is prescribed.
This allows us to identify and address risk factors early, so your jaw is ready for the device.

  • Follow-Up Visit:
Scheduled approximately one month after receiving your oral appliance.
During this visit, we reassess your jaw mobility, comfort, and muscle balance — ensuring your tissues are adapting well to the device.

Some individuals benefit from additional therapy sessions depending on their specific findings, but the two-visit package is the minimum recommended to reduce your risk.

2. What We Do

Your one-hour initial evaluation is performed by a physical therapist specializing in TMJ and craniofacial conditions.

During this session, we will:

  • Assess your jaw joint mobility and function

  • Identify muscle imbalances, fascial restrictions, or joint limitations

  • Evaluate your posture and movement patterns that influence jaw mechanics

  • Determine any other contributing factors that could increase your TMJ risk

Based on your assessment, we’ll create a personalized home program that may include:

  • Targeted jaw mobility and stability exercises

  • Self–myofascial release techniques to improve muscle flexibility

  • Postural and breathing corrections to support proper jaw alignment

This home plan prepares your jaw for the changes that occur as your oral appliance is adjusted over time — helping you adapt comfortably as your treatment progresses.

3. Why This Matters

Many people don’t realize that TMJ pain is preventable. Once discomfort starts, it can make wearing your sleep apnea device difficult or even impossible — interrupting your treatment and your progress toward better sleep and health.

Our TMJ Risk Reduction Program is a proactive, forward-thinking collaboration between your sleep apnea provider and our team of specialized physical therapists. By addressing potential issues before they become painful, we help you stay on track with your sleep therapy and avoid setbacks.
