Green ZonesHow surfactant can teach us about improving your chronic pain Posted on September 16, 2025 by Physiofit How surfactant can teach us about improving your chronic pain In the late 1950s, a paper broke the field of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome wide open. It was due to a publication by Dr. Mary Ellen Avery pinpointing the key to this disease: the discovery of surfactant. Surfactant coats the alveoli, the air sacs in the lungs where oxygen enters the body. This prevents the alveoli from sticking together when your baby exhales or breathes out. Prior to this discovery, the mortality rate of babies with respiratory illness was over 60%, now it is 5%. So, how does this relate to your chronic pain? It comes down to finding the absence of something instead of the presence of something. When we have pain in an area, our typical go-to is to find something that is “in there”. This could be inflammation, degeneration, tears, or other conditions. In many cases, our advanced diagnostics such as MRIs show that these types of findings are normal in individuals, begging to question if they are meaningful to you having pain. So instead of finding the presence of something, we should look for the absence of something. This is exactly what Dr. Avery did many years ago. She found that afflicted newborns who died of respiratory failure were not diseased because of the presence of something, but because of the absence of something. This was found to be surfactant. Look at what that discovery did for medicine. Now imagine what this type of thinking can do for your chronic pain. A solution can be looking for the absence of something instead of the presence of something. This is exactly what we do with our Feel it to Heal it Physio approach. Our goal: we find out what is not working in the muscular system to then fix it and help you feel better. This type of discovery has helped hundreds of patients over the years who do not get better anywhere else. Imagine what this discovery can do for your, your family, or friends.
