Green ZonesExercise Strategies: stressor or down regulator? Posted on September 16, 2025 by Physiofit Exercise Strategies: stressor or down regulator? When most of us think of exercise, we think of sweat, high heart rate and being out of breath. Some may even think torture! In reality, exercise does not have to be these descriptors. It can also be the exact opposite. When you approach an allotment of time to yourself, I recommend strategizing what your goals are. Either, Exercise as a stressor Exercise as a down regulator Examples of stressors can be lifting weights, running, high intensity interval training. These are what you think you would do at a gym. Examples of down regulators can be breathing exercises, meditation, stretching. These are what you think you would do at a yoga class. Both are integral to our bodies —- in the sense of our mind, cardiovascular health, immune system function and muscle function. At certain times of our lives, especially when dealing with injuries, this is especially important. The reason you may not be getting better is that the exercise strategy is incorrect. This is where our physical therapy team excels. We do not just run you through exercises and check off boxes like many clinics. We can help guide you to what is needed for you. If you feel like your current strategy is not working out, feel free to contact us at 919-728-0335 or schedule online to get you back on track!
